Here’s What It’s Like to Work In an Industry That Kind of Hates You (InStyle)
Like most elder millennials who graduated with a journalism degree during a recession year, I’ve had more than several professional lives . But, I’ve always been a writer.
I started pitching essays in 2013 while I was living in Seoul, South Korea and working full-time as a teacher and ESL textbook editor. After placing a few essays, I decided to move to New York and pursue a career in media. Since then, my work has been published in dozens of places, from early women’s media sites like xoJane (RIP), then as fashion features editor at Bustle, senior editor at InStyle, and the editorial director of a size-inclusive fashion startup.
From 2020 onward, I’ve written and edited for various publications and brands, building a vast e-commerce portfolio as a partnerships editors at DotDash-Meredith (formerly known as Meredith, formerly known as Time, Inc.), as well as a handful of lifestyle brands, including Bespoke Post and Joanna Vargas Skincare. I was the creative copy director for three Facebook and Facebook App LGBTQ+ campaigns, including Pride 2021 and 2022, and currently work for Netflix Editorial & Publishing.
My personal (and most prolific) body of work focuses on existing as a fat person, existing as a gay person, existing as a fat and gay person, self-acceptance, mental health, and trying to get dressed in the midst of all of it. I’ve got over a decade of bylines on topics like plus-size fashion, the scourge and scammery of body positivity, fat acceptance, how culture influences the relationship fat people have with themselves, and the complicated, deeply weird, sometimes-traumatizing, sometimes-hilarious experience of existing in a fat body.
Currently, I write a newsletter about all of the above (and more). It’s called fat hell. I also created a podcast about what it’s like to grow up as a fat kid. It’s called Big Calf.
If we work together in a capacity outside of those topics, I won’t bore you with them. It’s just kind of my thing.
I’m from Cleveland, Ohio, live in Brooklyn, and I have three dogs named Paul, Grandma and Bug. I’m also on Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
